Overview:
Explore Coimbra, the former capital of Portugal, on a guided tour led by a certified local guide with a degree in Anthropology. A city with centuries of history, Coimbra is known for its university—one of the oldest in the world—but also for its secrets, traditions, and typical products. The tour starts at Praça D. Dinis, next to the University, where the guide will be easily identified by their green T-shirt or sweater and yellow bottle. We will visit the University (exterior), passing by the Botanical Garden and the extraordinary underground Roman ruins of the Machado de Castro National Museum (open Tuesday to Sunday). On Mondays, when the ruins are closed, we visit the impressive 12th-century Old Cathedral. The itinerary also includes the Upper Town (Old Cathedral, Quebra-Costas), the Lower Town of Coimbra (Rua Visconde da Luz, Santa Cruz Church, Rua da Sofia, Praça do Comércio, Largo da Portagem), viewpoints with unique views, and a secret monument, almost always overlooked.
